Sometimes I have extremely overwhelming moments where I fear I will never physically get to where I want to be. • I fear I will never be able to live the life that I want to live or be what I want to be. • A crazy fun auntie that can run around, dance and play or even just snuggle comfortably, an adventurous family oriented girlfriend/wife that can physically withstand Christmas parties and road trips. A mom that is physically strong enough to carry, birth and care for her sweet little babies. • That constant worry that I’ll never get there is extremely tiresome and discouraging, but I try to remind myself that I don’t have to “wait” to live my life. I need to stop thinking that my life will start once I’m “fixed.” • Some people never get the chance to be those things and they are still humbled and grateful for what they have and what they are capable of. • I am reminding myself today to be more present and to be more grateful. ACL REHAB AS A STRENGTH COACH . Before I start: ACL rehab is first and foremost the job of a physical therapist, not a strength coach. There are certain measures (like ROM) that a strength coach should not try and accomplish. A strength coach should supplement what the physical therapist is doing and should be doing it at the right time of the rehab process. . Many times after PT, athletes hit a roadblock. "What should I do next?" "I can run but how can I get back to my sport stronger and faster?" "Should my knee EVER go past my toes again?" . If you're asking these questions, you're not alone! Many, but not all, physical therapists clear the athletes to run again and (hopefully) wait until 9 months to return back to their sport, without the strength and conditioning aspect of rehab. . If you're lucky, you can find a PT that is also a strength coach, so you can have the best of both worlds. If you’re a strength coach and you feel confident in helping in the rehab process of an ACL reconstruction, here are some tips: ⚠️Keep in mind, you should offer to step in after 3-6 months post ACLR or more ⚠️ . 🔘Have good communication between PT, Strength Coach, Parents, sports coaches. 🔘Be very very positive and supportive. This is a mental and physical journey. 🔘I can't stress this enough. Stay in your lane, if you don’t know or don’t feel confident DO NOT pretend. This is not something to take lightly. 🔘Be a strength coach, DO NOT try and deep tissue massage because ROM still isn't there. Leave that for the PT. 🔘Don't be a physical therapist, they have one already. 🔘Train strength, conditioning, plyometrics, agility, speed, balance, and reactivity. 🔘 Squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull and do core work. Don’t try and get fancy. 🔘It's ok for your knee to go past your toes. 🔘When box jumping, make sure both feet land evenly. 🔘When squatting, watch for a hip shift. 🔴If the last three tips are new to you, you should think twice about strengthening an ACLR and refer out or ask for help 😏 . The shoulder is a complex part of our body made up of 4 different joints. Moreover pain in a certain point is rarely the source of the trouble. By careful testing and palpation as well as a good knowledge of which movement in particular is painful, together with the knowledge of how this first happened and how long ago it began, we begin to unravel the mystery of each individual persons pain and other symptoms. There remained at least 2 problems in this patients shoulder. His painful arc, shown fully in the IGTV episode (coming up soon) highly indicative of impingement syndrome where the structures under the acromion are squashed and the AC joint itself was immobile. He also has some subscapular muscle trigger points restricting the motion. Addressing each of these gave him some immediate relief but he needs follow ups to achieve a fully functioning joint.
