A fun variation of Tree on the mat using the foot strap & the #magiccircle to one of my favorite songs #sealionwoman or #seelinewoman 🤔 (my fave version is actually Nina Simone, but Feist’s rendition is good too) . . A lovely way to open up the back & the hamstrings, to work abdominal and back strength and spinal mobility! . . Ditch the foot strap for a greater challenge, but only if you can execute the exercise without momentum 😉 . . 💫 Start seated tall with a neutral spine (bend your bottom leg if you don’t quite have the strength or flexibility to stay fully lifted in your spine) . 💫 Next, only lift the leg as high as you can while maintaining the lifted spine (no leaning back or slouching 🙅🏻‍♀️) Pull back on the ring using your arms (make sure the elbows are bent and reaching away out to the sides) . 💫 Round your spine forward TO your leg (“up and over”) and bring the leg close to you. 👉🏼keep the lift in your lumbar . 💫 Roll down and articulate your spine (tip: reach and slide your sitz bone of the stretched leg forward as you bring the leg back with you) 👉🏼 keep neutral pelvis & spine during the stretch . 💫 On the way up, first just use your abdominals to lift your head, neck and shoulder up with minimal pulling effort of your arms . 💫 Then, use your arms to PULL the ring while using your foot/leg to PUSH the ring 👈🏼 that creates the leverage to create a natural controlled rocking of the body back up . 💫 Once at the top again, lower your leg and find your tall spine like you did at the start . 💫 After a few rounds, enjoy an IT band stretch and then carry your leg open to get those adductors...but stabilize the other side 👉🏼 don’t let the opposite hip roll over to your stretched leg. At any skill level opening the back takes time, there are many muscles involved and often the sides are not equal. Sometimes people struggle to stretch their backs and become discouraged because they feel it in the shoulders or sides (lats) instead, the cool news is because it’s all connected THIS IS A GOOD THING✊🏽by moving through different back stretches you can uncover your restrictions by feeling out what is tightest🙌🏽🙌🏽 once the restrictions become clear then targeting them becomes far easier! That doesn’t mean to only focus on the restrictions though, it means that they are simply more involved in your day to day living than the other muscles (stress tension/lack of movement/sports/previous or current injury ect all play a role in why that might be)...moving the body through general stretching daily can help release stress AND assist in becoming more flexible mentally and physically. You never know if you don’t try.
