When athletes come in for an “extra” session, or when they come in the day before their athletic event. They go through an active rest/active recovery training session. Every exercise is ultra high reps, and performed mostly under band tension, some are consisting of band tension only. The goal of this day is to increase intravenous blood flow to the skeletal muscle. We accomplish this by aiming to eliminate the eccentric (lengthening) portion of the movement and focusing mainly on the concentric (shortening) phase of the exercise. By striving to avoid eccentric loading, we are minimizing the trauma placed on the skeletal muscles, resulting in increasing blood flow which will facilitate recovery in the athlete. Athlete mistakes: • Here is one that I see many novice (and some more experienced!) athletes making. They think that they have to be good all the time, they have to beat their old PB every session, they have to improve every week. Every hard session they have to WIN. Every test they have to ace. Do I look shocked?! • Why is that a mistake? Because improvement is a gradual process that happens over years, and take patience and commitment. If you expect to improve every week of every year you will be sorely disappointed. It’s an unrealistic expectation that will undermine your performance. We all have good days and bad days in training. Instead focus on the long game. It is not about individual brush strokes, but how the completed picture looks. • So don’t be disheartened if you don’t hit “the numbers” on a hard session. Do your best. Work hard. Be consistent. It will happen. Just not instantly. • This was my face after my first treadmill session in a while. It was not pretty or fast. 3 Aquabats are going to Brazil! The US Kayak Polo National Team is going to compete in the continental Pan American championship in Brazil in November. Kayak Polo is a exciting game and is a relatively new sport in this country. Part of the challenge for the US team is paying for expensive gear and travel expenses.
