Quick desk stretch routine 🙆‍♂️ Don't let your spine get stiff while sitting at a desk and bring some mobility back into your body.⁠ ⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ Being stationary for prolonged periods of time is not good for our bodies. When we spend hours sitting at a desk our spine gets compressed and our muscles get tight from holding the same posture.⁠ ⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ Break up these long sedentary periods with these stretches!⁠ ⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ ▪️ Lower Back and Side Stretch: Lock one hand down across your body to the outside of your chair. Bring the other arm overhead and reach over for 30 seconds before changing sides.⁠ ⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ ▪️ Mid and Upper Back Stretch: Put your elbows on the desk with your hands behind your neck. Push your hips back so that your chest is aimed towards the floor. Take a deep breath and sink the chest down on your exhales. Repeat several times.⁠ ⁠⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁠ ▪️ Seated Cat/Cow: Arch your spine, shining your heart to the desk before rounding your spine towards the rear. Quarterback is the most unique position player in football (sorry, kickers🤷🏼‍♂️). It’s the only player whose primary physical skill is the ability to turn rotational force into linear force with an overhead throwing motion from an unlimited possibility of positions. The lifeblood of a QB’s career is developing/sustaining the ability to ROTATE & FLEX their spine & ribcage with force & coordination. It drives me crazy to see young QB’s powerlifting or crossfitting exclusively to gain mass, with absolutely no regard for what they ACTUALLY do on the field. Throwing power DOES NOT come from how much you bench!!!! (Actually, almost no on-field power comes from how much you bench!). Loss of a coordinated spine, scapula & rib cage is a death sentence for throwing athletes, and this is what happens with most ‘conventional’ lifting programs. Here’s a daily routine I like for young Q’s to help fight back against poor weightroom programming. . . 1&2) Here are some general strengthening exercises for the rotator cuff, lats, & rhomboids, where our goal is to get the shoulder blade to glide smoothly along the rib cage (they don’t call it a ‘gliding joint’ for nothing). . 3-5) Once our ‘gliding’ muscles are firing, we want to use them to ACTIVELY create movement & flexibility in the spine & rib cage. The key here is to be active! We are not going through the motions, but rather using the muscles of the shoulder blades to lead the charge in moving the rest of our torso, much like what happens when we throw. . . Train smart! What should you do after you play/pitch? - I’m a big advocate of getting a good workout in! - This guy had his best outing all year over the weekend. 6 innings, 1 run, and helped get his team into the championship game. - He had already played 3 games previous to his start so he could easily say he was too tired to come in and workout but when you have big goals, you have to have big work ethic! - Why get a lift in after playing? - Promote blood flow, work on mobility deficits that happen from playing, speak to a professional about how your body/arm is feeling so they can make sure to add or subtract anything that might hinder that recovery process. - So many physical benefits to getting a good lift in. - I really believe there are mental benefits too! - Have a great weekend or game? Build off that momentum to make sure you are prepared for the next game! - Weekend/game didn’t go how you wanted? Take some frustration out on the weights in your workout, mentally and physically “flush it” and move on! - Training is always a great option after playing. Tuesday arm work. The muscles at the top of the arms are the deltoids. Tone them up and you’ll have a pair of arms that you won’t want to hide in sleeves this summer: 💪 Using the heaviest weights you can manage, perform one side arm raise and one forward arm raise. 💪 Raise both arms together, no higher than shoulder height. 💪 Repeat these moves until you can’t do any more.
