Waking up before 6am to enjoy the sunrise over the mountains was definitely worth it. You know you are becoming a grown up when you set an alarm during a holiday trip much earlier than you do on work days.

Bottles. Glass. With plastic specimen. Her research began with carcasses washing ashore—strangled sea turtle, choked whale, and an albatross rotting on the black sand beach of a South Pacific atoll with its exposed stomach spilling forth a piñata worth of bottle caps, buttons, straws, condoms, green army figures and a pink BIC lighter that still struck a flame. She focuses on microplastics—mere millimeters in size. Fragments frictioned off tires or shed from clothes, microbeads in gels and exfoliants, or any plastic item weathered into shards and washing down drains converging and spilling out to sea. Her theory is microplastics harbor a bacteria that colonizes coral reefs until they sicken, bleach and die. These studies brought her to a remote splattering of islands whose inhabitants, cut off from mainland and from consequences of their actions, discard garbage to the sea. One day, sampling along a reef in the crosshairs of currents siphoning trash from the islands, she finds a bottle. Glass. With a note like a specimen. Paper. And another bottle. And more. Onboard, she uncorks each and reads. While each bottle is similar, messages seem scripted from different hands, but all with a similar tale to tell: stranded… help! She studies tides depicted on maps as wispy strands waving over blue and traces from the reef to a source. Drawn by strange current, she sets off on a rescue; by dawn, an island with a wide crescent-mouthed beach is dead ahead. She drops anchor and swims ashore. In jungle scruff beyond the beach she finds makeshift shelter, smashed coconuts, attempts at fire…but: no answer to her calls. Returning to the beach, she sees her boat—dragged by waves into rocks—sinking. Days later, she wanders in hunger towards strange white protrusions—emerging from sand like sprouts of coral. Bones. Human. Ribs, toes, fingers polished by sand, bleached by sun. Seeming similar but from different hands. Carcasses washed ashore: An ulna inside a red and black flannel sleeve; a skull reclaimed by a crab living inside an eye socket. All breaking to shards. She blinks stupefied. A glittering catches her eye. Just down the beach…A crate. Glass. Bottles.

On the coast of Eastern China, big structures were built along the shore. Used for seaweed drying, farming of oysters and for fishing like on this photo. Some reach as far as the eye can see #china #xiapu

Supposedly the world's largest public

Tian'anmen Square, Beijing 🇨🇳 Supposedly the world's largest public space, security is tight and everything appears highly controlled and regimented. For the outside world, it's no surprise, following events almost 30 years ago. For the ordinary Chinese though, it's a must-see in the city center, with the flag raising and lowering ceremonies attracting very large crowds! . . . . . #instapassport #beijing #beijingtrip #beijing🇨🇳 #streetphotographer #streetphotomag #beijinglife #ig_masterpiece #theprettycities #flashesofdelight #travelog #mytinyatlas #visualmobs #theglobewanderer #forahappymoment #exploringtheglobe #travelon #unlimitedparadise #chinatrip #chinatour #chinagram #travelinchina #chinatravel #unlimitedchina

Changsha was alive with the sounds and bright lights of fireworks last night, in a stunning display that celebrated China’s burgeoning role in space exploration, space technology and the dream-like nature of space itself. Snowy night in Changsha china. I was stuck in the hospital for a week during Christmas and new years. We were lucky enough to enjoy one beautiful showing day. He snuck me out of the hospital to go play in the snow. Lucky for me the infection in my lunges are mostly gone. It was really a beautiful evening, spent with a beautiful human being.

Better brush up your Mandarin, folks 😀 Next to the only staffed ticket booth (besides a lot of ticket machines which you can only use with scanning a Chinese ID) for the famous #humbleadministratorgarden in #suzhou.
