Building strength in the chin-up can be frustrating. It’s tough to be able to get to 10 reps when you’re starting from 1 or 2 as your max. This week, I’m sharing three variations to help you accumulate volume and accelerate your progress. Today we’re looking at 5 Second Eccentrics. Muscles are stronger working eccentrically than concentrically. By replacing the concentric portion of the movement with a jump, we’re able to do work in the eccentric phase that we otherwise wouldn’t be able to if we were doing strict reps. Eccentric strength is part of chin-up ability, so it makes sense to develop it, even on it’s own. # Coaching advice: Use a plate or a box to make the chin-up bar easy to reach. Grab the bar and jump up. Take a second to stabilize, and then lower yourself down under tension over 5 seconds. Once you’ve reached the bottom, jump up and repeat. Rear foot elevated split squats 3x10. I can’t stress enough the importance of single leg training. Single leg training will help to improve any strength imbalances you have between each leg. It will also help to improve hip stability to varying degrees depending on the exercise. No chest press no problem... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you don’t have access to the chest press machine in the gym just hop on the 𝐥𝐞𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Lean forwards to match the path the machine will travel in and try to maintain that position throughout. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Set yourself up as close as possible to the foot platform (you may have to place a ball behind your back to stop yourself from sliding back). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is a great isolation movement to include once you’ve done your bench press/ big compound movements. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 10-12 reps x4. Focus on squeezing the chest when your arms are fully locked out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That’s what you call innovation 😉 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
