CHALLENGE YOUR CORE TODAY! Today, I worked on coordination while focusing on breath. Preventing inhalation in the core is an excellent challenge during exercise. The sniff breath, when executed properly, allows for inhalation in the rib cage as opposed to the core. Not only does this provide support to the head, neck and shoulders, it also provides support to the low back and hips. When I inhale with the sniff breath, I feel my core muscles stabilize my back as my naval travels upward. Next time you do elephant or long stretch series, see if you can prevent inhalation in the core and feel inhalation in the rib cage. I always tell my students breath is a tool not a rule. This is an amazing stretch and very supportive using the foot bar just below the base of the shoulder blades. Core contraction helps to elongate spine. Getting a little time on the reformer with my class this morning. **FOOT POSITION IS KEY!! My foot is off to the side of the head rest which externally rotates my kneeling hip creating more stability. My left arm is holding the strap behind my right hip. This helps facilitate rotation of the torso. This one is a great low back stretch. With two red springs and the strap on my thigh, it really helped to traction my pelvis away from my rib cage. It gave me a wonderful stretch without compressing my opposite side. Head, neck shoulder organization is paramount. This is a great time to work the upper body. CLIMB A TREE VARIATION • • Here’s a great climb a tree variation that offers stability during rotation and lateral hip flexibility. With my three disc herniation‘s, rotation can often agitate my spine.
