The double bind creates an infinite loop that acts to contain all the body’s energy. The forward fold allows for introspection, and reflection on the emotions that have come up during practice. . Without yoga, undoubtedly my mental health would be in a much worse state. Yoga helps me cope with a stressful, high-pressured career. Welcome, welcome, the heat of the sun, blessing us all with its rays. . | Yule sunrise prayer | . . Today is the day after winter solstice, which was the year’s shortest day. It’s probably my mind playing tricks on me, but already it seems like today, there was a little more light than yesterday. . Moving to Ireland from Kentucky some 10 years ago took some adjusting to the length of days. There’s a big difference in latitude between the two places. In Dublin, the winter the days are only about 7 hours long, but in the summer there’s 17 hours of sun! The difference isn’t so obvious in Kentucky. The long nights of winter can be tough here, but the long days in summer more than make up for it. . Here’s to longer days! ☀️

That said, this final week of the year is a time when I naturally like to reflect on the year that has passed. I like to appreciate the hard work that I’ve done, the progress I’ve made, and the people I’ve connected with. . Do I have any resolutions for the new year? Not particularly. Anything I want to do, I try not to delay it for the turn of a year. I think if I had looked back on my year with regret, I might be more prone to making a big resolution. Looking at these two photos, it’s hard for me to believe that these are the same woman. But they are! Both are me, 4 years apart. . My follower count has been rising rapidly lately, and I’m totally blown away by how many of you want to follow my journey. 🙈 Every now and again I like to share my background story, so today seemed like a fitting time to write about a bit of it - the physical effects of practice. . I’m working as a doctor for 6 years now. I have to admit that in the early days my way of coping with the stresses of the job were not healthy. Work hard, play hard, right? It caught up with me eventually. I was carrying too much weight for what felt comfortable for me. I had constant back pain and sciatica, and relied on Ibuprofen to get me through the day. I bought loads of makeup and clothes to try and make myself comfortable in my own skin. . And now? I’ve settled into a comfortable weight for myself. I rarely wear makeup or buy new clothes. The sciatica is there, but not everyday and I can manage it with practice. Life is good 😁

I was convinced that material and financial gains would somehow lead to happiness. I had closets (yes, multiple) full of clothes, shoes, and accessories. More than any one person could ever need. I never put any thought to the impact my purchases had on other people or animals. . These days, I recognize and fight against those impulses. I try to avoid unnecessary purchases, and generally live a simpler life. With this page, I only promote brands that I know are making a positive impact. . Catching up with #OmstarsAshtangaChallenge with some difficult headstand variations! . These challenged me a lot mentally. I feel very happy in the regular bound headstand (sirsasana), because I know how to safely fall out of it. These new headstand variations, which I don’t practice yet, felt more vulnerable to me. They’ll be a fun challenge when I do get them one day! And I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to fall safely too. . The first headstand, Baddha Hasta Sirsasana B, felt quite stable. However, I can see in my photo that fear kept me from going completely straight up. . The second headstand, Mukta Hasta Sirsasana A, was especially scary for me! I felt safest keeping it at the preparatory pose with my toes on the ground. I went up only once or twice to see how it would feel, with the wall safely at my back. . . 🧘🏼‍♀️ Host: @kinoyoga . Full disclosure: side plank is something I never ever practice. In Ashtanga, it doesn’t appear until Third Series, so I won’t be worrying about it anytime soon! 😜 . The best way to get through hump day? Do something fun! . . . For me inversions are a great way to press reset and take time out! I find them a great way to clear my head, probably because I’m so focused on what I’m doing I don’t have time to think of anything else 🤣 . . . Apart from the joy in finding the balance there are so many benefits for the body and mind. But for a lot of people there is also a huge element of fear! I hear ya!!! I had a really bad fall in this very pose ⬆️ a few years ago and it left me absolutely petrified of all inversions. Determined to conquer my fear I created my own sequences to build both my strength and confidence! And now I love them 💜 . . . I’m taking this to the pod this weekend for my inversions and arm balance workshop hotpodyogadublin and there are 2 spaces left!! Yoga Tuesdays & PIlates Thursdays! Hope some of you got to see the 🌚 Lunar eclipse. It was cloudy by the time I looked 😞 but the full moon looked spectacular. The theme of the yoga classes will be the full moon 🌕 and we will work around the Moon Flow sequence. Learning to do Chaturanga Dandasana with better form, and holding it for the full exhale every time, has been a game changer in my quest to get stronger. . Chaturanga was impossible for me when I started yoga about 3.5 years ago. I had no core or upper body strength at all. Even after 2 years of practicing, my form was really poor, and I tended to swoop through something resembling chaturanga and quickly to updog. . So what changed? The main thing was that I switched to an Ashtanga-only practice, 5-6 days a week. There’s a LOT of chaturangas in Primary Series. I’ve read before that there is at least 60. Doing that many poor-form anything will lead to injury, which it did for me (wrist and shoulder at different times). My teacher and I worked on my chaturanga form, a lot! Over time, the injuries healed, and bonus points for stronger core. . Now every time I do a chaturanga, I’m thinking: bum tucked, core engaged, elbows squeeze against the body, chest open, look forward. Next thing I’m trying to tackle is not letting the shoulders dip when I get tired. . So - do you #WannaBeAStrongerYogi too?? It is so important to take time for yourself, I’ve spent the last week coming back to myself! Traveling for me has always been a way to relax and unwind, this is the first time I have ever really travelled on my own and it has been challenging but so rewarding! Learning how to hold myself up, physically and emotionally Now that I've started to take my practice deeper and learn more about yoga philosophy I'm seeing how much the physical poses spark an emotional response. Each pose has a personality, each one completely unique. Sometimes they make me feel as free as a mermaid or as small as a ladybird and sometimes the same pose will make me feel a different way to the way it did the day before. But they always hold me.
