Catching up with #OmstarsAshtangaChallenge with some difficult headstand variations! . These challenged me a lot mentally. I feel very happy in the regular bound headstand (sirsasana), because I know how to safely fall out of it. These new headstand variations, which I don’t practice yet, felt more vulnerable to me. They’ll be a fun challenge when I do get them one day! And I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to fall safely too. . The first headstand, Baddha Hasta Sirsasana B, felt quite stable. However, I can see in my photo that fear kept me from going completely straight up. . The second headstand, Mukta Hasta Sirsasana A, was especially scary for me! I felt safest keeping it at the preparatory pose with my toes on the ground. I went up only once or twice to see how it would feel, with the wall safely at my back. . . 🧘🏼‍♀️ Host: @kinoyoga . While I’ve been able to get the bind in this pose for a long time, I’m still constantly working on it. Something I like to do is use the bent knee to actively push into the bound arms to deepen the twist. This also helps keep the spine long. I was waiting on the moment, but the moment never came. All the billion other moments, were just slipping all away. I must have been tripping, just ego-tripping. . | Wayne Coyne | . #AshtangaMondays pose of the week is Upavistha Konasana. . Echoing the above song lyric, this pose is a lovely reminder to be present in the here and now. At this point in my practice, I’m usually thinking ahead to the upcoming postures. But there’s a lot of work to be done in this pose! . I find wide-legged forward folds challenging. In the A variation (folded forward chest to ground), I focus on grounding the sit bones and keeping the spine long. This helps deepen the hamstring stretch and prevents me from just flopping into my flexibility, like I’m prone to doing. This pose comes in the second half of the Primary Series, and entails sliding arms through the lotus, holding the face while gazing cross-eyed at the nose, then rolling around your mat in a circle. Try not to freak out people new to the Mysore room with this one 😂😂😂 . Showing a video from my practice a couple days ago. No cats were harmed in the filming of this video! ONE TO ONE OR SMALL GROUP MOVEMENT AND MOBILITY SESSIONS I've moved away from the group class setting to work more closely, technically and therapeutically with one to one clients or small groups. My one on one or small group therapeutic movement and mobility sessions are informed by the training system Functional Range Conditioning, with tried and tested techniques from Yoga, Strength & Conditioning, Functional Movement and Mobility. The goals of these classes are: Mobility and Flexibility training Articular health & maintenance Joint strengthening Rehabilitation Performance enhancement Enhanced Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Nervous System Health I've been teaching yoga since 2010 and have an Advanced Teaching qualification (500hr Yoga Alliance certification). Since 2012 I've worked in Yoga Teacher Training Schools all over Ireland, training teachers and lecturing in nutrition and lifestyle. I also have an honours degree (BSc) in Herbal Science, a practitioner's diploma in Clinical Herbal Medicine, and I run my Herbal Medicine clinic in Café Move, Doughcloyne, Cork. My Therapeutic Movement and Mobility Development sessions are for you if you seek better movement patterns, strength, mobility and a healthier nervous system. Mobility refers to the amount of active, usable motion that you possess. Namaste What does Namaste mean and why do we say it at the end of a Yoga class? Namas: to bow Te: to you Namaste, Namaskar or Namaskaram is a common greeting or salutation in India. In its literal form, namaste means "I bow to you" and it expresses deep respect. When spoken to someone, namaste is usually accompanied by a mudra (hand gesture) where the hands are pressed together in a prayer position in front of our heart chakra (this hand gesture is called Anjali mudra.) In Yoga, namaste refers to a more refined spiritual meaning, which can be explained as "The light within me honors the light within you." In Yoga, it is that moment of acknowledgement between a teacher and a student, a moment of connection where with only one word, you thank each other for being present that day and for respecting and honoring the space that was shared.
