On my first ever trip to the US for British GQ magazine the then style director Peter Howarth outlined to me the basic differences between the US and the UK markets. Using GQ magazine as an example I learned from him that the US market was huge in comparison to the British one. With the US circulation well over 10 times that of the British GQ, there would always be much more at stake with shooting for the American version of this magazine, and the same was true for commercial jobs too. The potential sales (or loss of sales) With a market/ audience that big had real consequences. I got it, but I didn’t quite get it until I started shooting for @gapkids With the then in house A.D. Stefan Niedzwiecki of @yardnyc . I was commissioned to work with gapkids on the basis of my work with @paulsmithjunior For whom I had shot simple real gritty, funny portraits. For PS we just got in kids and I was allowed to shoot them however I wanted and that was that. But THIS Guy was all over me right from the casting all the way through to the editing. At first I wasn’t used to it but over seasons of working together I realized what a professional I was working under. The attention to detail was second to none. Even though the broader brief was always the same -kids agsinst some sort of white- it was because of this season to season similarity that Stefan felt it was important to push it forward and move it to new places constantly. I learned from him that, when creatively speaking you are playing on a small pitch, you have to work hard and work smart. Most art directors I had worked with before were incredibly laissez-faire but this guy was on it like a car bonnet and an inspiration to boot.
