. Every morning I show my breathwork on my stories for 2 reasons. 1. It holds me accountable. 2. I hope to inspire others to start this very powerful practice that lets us change our own body’s physiology. . We spend most of our time in our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). But we have another nervous system called the parasympathetic (rest and digest.) The sympathetic nervous system has most people swimming in cortisol. Doing breathwork is a quick to instantly turn on the parasympathetic nervous system, which regulate brings cortisol levels down. Breathwork also stimulates the vagus nerve which sends a message to the brain to relax. The increase of oxygen to the brain creates a euphoric feeling. It reduces anxiety and flushes the lymphatic system. It also feels amazing. On days when I’m tired, or down breathwork gives me an energy I can’t really describe. . You can go weeks without food, and days without water. But no more than a few minutes without breath. Learning to access and work with your breathing is a powerful tool to connect the mind and body and control your internal world to exist better in your external one. . My future fantasy involves breathwork to be ‘normal’ in offices, schools, gyms, and public parks🧘🏻‍♀️ . Deep breath from belly . Hold at top of breath for 5 seconds . Release naturally . Repeat 5-10 times . It is normal to feel dizzy at first. This is just your cells adjusting to the oxygen. . The problem with both this book and the movie is that most people who never experienced cancer will unlikely be interested. Competing was the catalyst, but my MIND was the game changer 🔥 . . My #fitnessjourney started in 2013 when wearing a pair of shorts brought me to tears. This is not a message that reads “prep life IS life,” but it IS about finding your #power. . . That feeling resulted in me buying so many books, investing in coaches, tools, #supplements so that I couldn’t look back. I was done crying, enough is enough 🚫 . . #Motivation comes from crazy places. There is something inside of me AND YOU that ignites when it’s time to go. My drive comes from my mind. Once I have a goal, get the hell out of my way, or I will take you down. . . We call the drive funny names like “tunnel vision,” having “blinders on,” or whatever helps you sleep at night to get you to that finish line. I think almost every #bikinicompetitor can recognize that mindset, yes? . . I went through a period where I felt like I was just aimlessly moving through life after my last show. I only recognized my fire 🔥 in certain mirrors, like the stage, or in #posing room with my heels and headphones 🎧 doing whatever the hell it took to be 5% better. I hated that period. I didn’t recognize myself without my blinders and emotionally it felt like torture. . . After another one of the longest, and most challenging years that was 2018, I spotted my flicker. It’s been keeping me up at night, making my day dreams bigger and my #passion for #health and #fitness level 💯 . . If you are still looking for yours, look at yourself straight in the eye. HOW TO MINIMIZE FAT GAIN OVER THIS HOLIDAY 2018 SEASON!⁣ ⁣ Cold season is clearly upon us sooner than I realized.❄☃️⁣ This also means the holidays are pretty much here.⁣ Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years.⁣ ⁣ I know a lot tend to stress about the food part of this all, so I wanted to quickly give a few pointers on how to minimize fat gain over this next month and a half.⁣ ⁣ 1. Indulge but don't overindulge.🍨⁣ Eat until you feel full, but not overly full. You don't have to eat everything just because it's in front of you. This should be practiced in everyday life, not just on the holidays.⁣ ⁣ 2. Protein, protein, protein.🦃🍗⁣ No, not protein powder.⁣ I mean high protein foods like turkey.⁣ Try to fill your plate with more protein sources as your body tends to burn more calories from digesting protein sources vs any other food source. Plus, protein fills you up a lot quicker.⁣ Don't forget some veggies!⁣ ⁣ 3. LEFTOVERS. Your worst enemy.⁣ 🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫⁣ This right here is the reason people gain a lot of weight over the holidays.⁣ Not because they enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.⁣ 2 meals won't make you gain a ton of weight.⁣ Eating past the two days on leftovers is what gets people big time.⁣ 1 day of indulging moderately turns into 2 days, 3 days, and so forth.⁣ Before you know it, you just ate a Thanksgiving dinner amount of food everyday up till Christmas time, and then continued with Christmas dinner.⁣ Enjoy one day and jump right back into a normal, healthy, and balanced routine!⁣ ⁣ 🧣💨❤ Stay warm. // b o o k s ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m a bookaholic with limits on my time and insatiable curiousity, which isn’t the best mix, but for the love of books, I’ll take them anyway I can, paragraph at a time, in micro bursts my passion endures. These are current reads as well as those I’ve read in the past few months. I had to leave loads out, including my Audible or Kindle books! The topics include positive living, self development, spirituality, identity, activism, simple living, mental health and sloths😂😍📚. The @hayhouseuk #diversewisdom event gave me insight into the incredible work and grit that allows an idea to bloom, become a book and finally an idea in someone else’s hands. So these little loves of mine seem more precious than ever. I also felt the urgency for a sea change to occur. We need to hear voices of ALL persuasions, and acknowledge their relevance. I spoke to people, who like me have held back or carefully edited their story for wary eyes. As a queer, black mother with a multitude of layers I have as many stories to share as anyone. But stepping into my calling in the arena of mental health and wellness that I love has been confronting for me, theres a more recognised and acceptable face and voice, and then theres mine.

Reading provides us a safe way to meet people that cross boundaries of class, race, gender, sexuality and more. All too often the narrative we see is comes from frighteningly similar pool and anything that veers from this is marginalised or made irrelevant. Our similarity is to be celebrated, but lets realise that it comes from a broad base of people. We need diversity in our writers, publishers, media in our social feeds and beyond so that we can see ourselves, see others, broaden our emotional language, increase our empathy and be more reliably informed.
 That said I would love both your comments and recommendations, so I can fill my heart and my bookshelves even more.
