We finally have some beautiful weather here after two weeks of consistent heavy rain. So, I wanted to try to get out and do some yoga photos. I don’t feel good at all, but getting out always helps me to feel a bit better. However, my iPhone storage has been maxed out for the last 2 weeks and my phone completely stopped functioning. After spending hours deleting over 3K photos, 40+ videos, a bunch of apps, loads of saved drafts and convos on insta, the storage actually went up rather than down. I then bought more iCloud space to free up room, which made the storage go up even more. The upload took a whole day and then it told me the upload was unsuccessful 🤦🏻‍♀️ . Before I knew it, the day flashed before my eyes, it was 1am and there went the weekend . . . I found myself getting stressed and wound up over a phone, when realistically it’s not that huge of a deal. I’ve spent almost the whole day today over the phone with an advisor, for them to tell me that they’ve never seen this before and I need to take it into the Genius Bar at the store. I’ve got an appointment tomorrow and I know I’ll get it fixed, but it sure is an inconvenience. The good thing is, its been distracting me from all the pain I feel so that’s nice. I guess this is kind of a pointless story, but it made me realise that sometimes in life things don’t quite go to plan and even small things can get the better of us. There are worse things in life right? Of course, I’ll get it fixed and everything will be back and running soon. I just took it as a sign that the universe wanted me to stay home and rest instead. It’s a new week and I’m ready to embrace it with full force. Plus, it finally let me post so that was nice 😁 . I’ve been so unwell lately and admittedly it’s been hard to even be on social media. I had a conversation with my husband the other day and I told him that I was grateful that this happened to me. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish Lyme disease on my worst enemy, but for the first time in my life I can truly see what matters. I used to worry about medial things like how I looked and if people liked me, when realistically who cares? . . . Having had anorexia nervosa for 11 years of my life, I was constantly self hating and in deep depression over my looks. There was absolutely nothing wrong with me, other than my mindset. We are not our bodies, we are souls wrapped up in our bodies in this lifetime. We all have different beliefs and I believe in reincarnation and the spirit world. I would have come down to the Earth plane knowing that this would be my path. Just knowing that gives me a source of comfort. I write this as I lay in bed in agony over another infection that my body has no strength to fight off, so here I am on antibiotics again. But no matter how I feel, I know there are always people in much worse situations than I am . . Anyway, on a positive note, I was tagged by my wonderful friend, @inspiremyyoga to talk about something I love about myself. This is always an awkward topic for me, but it’s important to have self love right? So, I’m doing it anyway. I’m damn good at just getting on with things and being there for others regardless of how I feel. I would cry over how I feel one minute, and the next I’m comforting a friend. You would never even know I had anything going on. I don’t complain either, as I love to see the good in everything. Maybe that’s also a downfall but the silver linings are always there if we look for them. I’ve had friends tell me that you wouldn’t even know the pain I’m in because I just get on with it, which I do. I just follow my intuition and never give up. Phew, that was awkward 😅 . . After sharing my story on here the other day, I had the most crazy amount of support. I also felt super grateful to have connected with so many new people, and those who are also going through the same as me, or something similar. I think social media can be bad in so many ways, but in my case it’s been amazing. Not only because of the connections and friends I’ve made on here, but also because after sharing, I’ve actually found a private clinic in the UK that knows how to treat people with Lyme disease . . . I already know this doesn’t mean it’s going to be an easy road - it’s already been so tough but finally, after so long, I’m feeling hopeful. I’ve spent the little energy I have today filling in the entry form for treatment and I’m so excited to be on the right path. I’m also truly lucky to have found yoga as I know without it, I’d be a bigger mess than I already am. If you think this flying warrior is awesome, just zoom in on my knees. That’s just a glimpse of how inflamed they are on a daily basis. I tend to cover them up for that reason. I also wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you who shared or reposted the newspaper article on Lyme testing on Saturday. It means so much to me that you’re supporting all those suffering with Lyme to continue spreading awareness . . . Last night my husband showed me an article in the @dailymail of a woman who passed away of Lyme disease because doctors failed to diagnose her on time. It’s heartbreaking in this day and age that fatalities such as these are happening when they could easily be prevented. If she’d been diagnosed earlier, this would have never happened. I remember the first time I knew I was seriously ill. I had an array of issues outside of the physical, visible ones: chest pains, difficulty breathing, seizures, insomnia, chronic fatigue, migraines ect... But I’m a young and seemingly healthy yogi. I’d seen my doctor for these on several occasions, but each time he had a logical explanation. These encounters continued for years until the day I came home from vacation after visiting family in Bulgaria. My body shut down, my legs gave way and I was unable to move or do anything. My husband had to carry me home as I couldn’t move my legs (I still can’t walk since this day). I went to A&E but they found nothing. It took 6 months to be seen by a Physio, all the while this disease was spreading around my body making me sicker . . . My physio confirmed that it’s not an injury, which lead to the referral of a Rheumatologist, who I waited a further 4 months for. The Rheumatologist misdiagnosed me - without any blood work. I decided to take matters into my own hands and found a private doctor who tested me for everything he could think of. There it was... Lyme Disease - tested positive . . . I was put on antibiotics, when I should have been in hospital. The doctor told me that ideally I should be on a drip, but the antibiotics will do the same and I will be fine in a month... WRONG. One night I had the worse seizure of my life and was taken to hospital. The doctors didn’t even know what Lyme disease was. I was eventually released and continued with my antibiotics. My GP failed to believe I have Lyme Disease regardless of the blood work & symptoms. He hadn’t heard of any cases of Lyme in the UK. I tried a 2nd private doctor who also confirmed that I do indeed have Lyme Disease. I’m still sick and not getting any treatment. I’ll have to pay thousands to get help privately as the NHS, GPs and most doctors don’t understand the disease . . That’s why it’s so important to spread awareness. There has been coverage in the news lately, and today @thetimes has published an article featuring Lyme warrior @emmablondevoyage sharing her story. So, it turns out I don’t mind this video thing as much as I previously thought I did 😅. It’s kind of fun to mix things up sometimes anyway. I may not be able to walk, or put weight on my legs #LymeDisease problems, but who says I can’t invert when I have fun props like this to play around with 💁🏻‍♀️. It’s not often I get to practice these days, but I do what I can when my body allows me and I just hope for the best . . . Swipe to see my pincha practice from last year when I used to be able to execute advanced inversions and had the strength to hold them (sort of). Wearing the same outfit, just 1 year apart and in two different locations. I’m making it sound so dramatic, aren’t I? In my head that seemed cool 😂. It’s still fun to see that my flexibility hasn’t really declined so much. Kept it short because this is pretty hard when you have balance issues and it’s always best to listen to your body. Working on inversions is kind of ambitious for me and not so smart at the moment, however playing around with the feeling of inversions on the @feetup is not such a bad idea . Are we all just stardust in human form? Everything you see and don’t see is made up of elements. And almost every element on Earth was formed at the heart of a star. Stars that go supernova are responsible for creating many of the elements of the periodic table, including those that make up the human body. If the elements making up the planet we live on are made by explosions inside stars, and these same elements are a major part of our bodies, we are the very essence of those stars ✨ . . I cannot express the outpour of love I’ve received after finally opening up about my diagnosis and everything that’s been going on with me. I was so nervous to share due to the fear of the unknown and how it could be received. However, all I’ve felt is love from this community 🙏🏼 . . Yesterday hubby and I celebrated 4 years of marriage and 8 years together! This realisation in itself fills my heart with so much gratitude. We had plans to go out, but unfortunately Lyme disease doesn’t care if it’s my anniversary. I woke up in lots of pain and in the middle of the day had a full on seizure. It took a few hours for me to come around and to regain my speech, but I didn’t want this illness to ruin our day. We decided to have a relaxed BBQ in the garden instead since the weather was so beautiful. It ended up being a lovely evening after all . . They say animals feel things, well we have a sweet baby cat named Luna, who I honestly believe is my spirit animal. Before I had my seizure, I was sitting outside in the garden with Chris (hubby) just chatting away when we hear Luna yelping from inside. So, Chris goes in to see what’s going on, since we’ve never heard her make these noises before. She starts going around his legs and carried on meowing at him. He figured she was hungry so he fed her and went back outside. She then jumped up to the window and carried on letting out these loud meows. Not even a few minutes later, my arm started convoluting followed by the rest of my body. Call me crazy, but I feel she knew it was going to happen and was warning us . Here goes... I’m finally ready to open up and talk about everything that’s been going on with me. After years of feeling unwell and never understanding why I just can’t function like everyone else - followed by a whole year of not being able to walk, I’ve been diagnosed with Lyme Disease . . . It has completely changed my life. I have gone from being in the best shape of my life to being bed bound for 6 days out of 7 in the week. I have chronic pain all over my body that sometimes gets so severe it turns into seizures. The disease has attacked my brain and central nervous system, meaning I also have chronic fatigue, brain fog, balance issues and I sometimes I can’t talk for hours on end. Of course, I’m also on crutches. This is because the disease has caused severe inflammation around my body - especially in my knees and also caused Lyme Arthritis. That’s just a snippet of what I’ve been dealing with, and what my fellow Lyme warriors deal with on a daily basis. I’m so ready to reclaim my life back and moving forward I’m feeling positive about sharing more with you from now on... Chronic illness is very REAL and something so many of us deal with, silently for years on end without ever being diagnosed or are misdiagnosed, like I was. I love you all and thank you for being here for the journey . . . Ever since I got sick, I’ve been embracing life more than ever before. I’ve been pushing myself to do things I normally wouldn’t, meeting people I normally wouldn’t, saying yes to things I normally wouldn’t, and funnily enough I’m more grateful and positive than I’ve ever been in my entire life. When you’re faced with health issues you suddenly realise what’s important. A physic once told me that I’m going to have a hard life because my purpose on this earth is to be compassionate to others and to be a teacher. I hope this helps those of you who are wondering how to get into this funky looking asana. It’s not half as scary or complicated as it may seem! ✨. . As I’ve mentioned in many of my posts, I’m on crutches and I’ve been unable to walk for nearly a year, yet somehow I was still able to do this after not practicing Shiva pose at all. We’ve made it to the end of our wonderful challenge and what an amazing one it’s been! As today is yogis choice, I wanted to challenge myself and try the ultimate hip opener of them all, the Shiva pose. This challenge has been full of breakthroughs for me and this asana is no different. All yoga poses help us to explore spiritual aspects of ourselves when we give them our full attention on the mat.  Challenging postures, however, often require even more spiritual inquiry as they demand that we delve into the darker aspects of ourselves when difficulties arise. We are challenged to examine our lack of patience, our tendency towards comparison, perhaps even our negative self talk on the journey towards opening the body enough for perhaps Shiva Pose . . Opening in the hips often encourages the release of negative feelings and unexpressed emotions which can feel scary at first. However, creating space in this area can help us to start to let go of our need for control over all aspects of our lives, freeing up space for creativity and expression. While most yoga poses involve the muscles around the hips and pelvis in some way, hip openers are a specific group of asanas whose main anatomical function is to maintain and develop a healthy range of motion in the hips. Wondering if you have tight hips? Here's a simple test: Stand and look down at your feet. If your toes point outward rather than straight ahead, your hip muscles are probably overworked and need to be stretched . . . Day 6 of #FlexyHealthyHippilastic is the splits or half splits 🌸 . . This is the first time I have ever attempted the splits in over a year. The last time I actually did the splits was back in July 2018, as I was dealing with some hamstring issues prior to getting sick. I must say I was extremely scared, but I did it anyway. You can’t actually tell in this photo, but my alignment is a bit off and I had the mat on the stairs to protect my knees too. I don’t condone splits on stairs but weirdly enough it helped with my alignment. We tend to live life with our hips locked up – and that’s not a good thing when it comes to pain, mobility, or even our emotions. Nearly everything we do closes up your hip muscles: sitting at your desk, driving, watching TV, reading, and even working out. Too much sitting in particular shortens the hip flexors, which limits your range of motion and contributes to lower back pain and bad posture. This is why we focusing on opening our hips is so important . . Day 5 of #FlexyHealthyHippilastic is Lizard pose 🦎 🌸 . . With the classic Lizard pose, your forearms would ideally be touching the floor. But as I mentioned previously, I have extremely bad knees so therefore, I have to be careful with how I conduct a lot of the asana I go into. So, I opted for a lizard variation with straight arms instead. Alternatively, you can use a block to rest your arms on as your make your way closer to the ground. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds, then repeat on the other side . . As we slowly work to prepare our body for this pose we are reminded that the present moment is all that we truly have. Compass pose has got to be one of my all time favourite asanas. It’s one I’ve not been able to do for nearly a year. There was a point when I thought it was never going to happen again. I’ve recently started adding it back into my practice and it feels incredible. I can’t do the standing variation anymore and my compass is definitely not what it used to be, but I’m just happy it’s back in my life!! 🙌🏼 . . Day 4 of #FlexyHealthyHippilastic is Compass pose 🧭 🌸 . . There are over 20 muscles that cross the hips. Lengthening these muscles allows us to complete basic tasks more freely (like squatting down to pick something off the floor) and reduces our likelihood of overusing and straining through the back. This is a complicated asana so if it’s not yet in your practice, the hip opening needed to move into the full expression of compass pose can be created through the practice of Happy Baby, Lizard Pose, and Twisted One Legged Dog. You can always practice these asanas instead, and with time it will hopefully happen. Remember, yoga is always about the journey and not the final destination! . . The challenge of moving into Compass Pose teaches us extreme patience as it may take many months (or even years) to find enough opening to move into the final expression of the posture with the leg fully extended and spine rotated. Why focus on the hips? Your hips are situated in the centre of your body. Therefore, when you can maintain and improve your flexibility in the hips, it can to help improve the relationship with your entire body. When you can find balance, strength and flexibility there it will start to have a knock on effect throughout the rest of our body . . . Day 3 of #FlexyHealthyHippilastic is Low lunge 🌸 . . I’ve chosen to bend my knee and add a twist. This could even count as a twisted Lizard. With your back knee down on the mat, bend the back leg and bring the heel towards the buttock. Take the right arm behind you and hold the outer edge of the back foot. On an exhalation, bend the right elbow pulling the left heel closer towards the glute. This is a big opening for the quadriceps of the back leg. Focus on lifting the front of the hip bones towards the navel to lengthen the psoas . Happy Saturday!
