Two days. Two runs. Easy paced runs to get me through the week leading up to @stpeterunfest ! I'm so excited for race weekend! I've been working hard on my mental game this week, staying positive, envisioning the race and how it could play out. Using visualization techniques from Deena Kastors "Let Your Mind Run" and @karagoucher "Strong" books. Highly recommend both if you haven't read them yet. I've also been journaling my progress throughout this training cycle and going back and reading about it so I could see all the work that's gone into this weekend. What a GORGEOUS weekend for my last weekend of training for @stpeterunfest! This run went amazing and I'm so happy with my pacing! Your mind will quit a thousand times before your body will. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Tonight's track workout was tough with the continued humidity. We're looking at a cold front coming through but it's not here yet. Was not as consistent as I wanted to be on my 400m splits. It was 10x400 (9:20, 8:58, 9:12, 9:03, 9:12, 8:56, 9:01, 8:55, 8:58, 8:42). I more focused on form and technique. And mental toughness in the last two repeats when my brain wanted me to slow down. Running has been a struggle for me this past month or so. I've been doing most of my runs but it's been tough. The weather has not been cooperative and its weighing heavily on my ability to stay positive about running. After talking with multiple people we've all come to the same conclusion: in the summer, you expect the conditions to suck. Its summer. It's supposed to be hot for the most part. You go into it knowing that this will be the case. You accept it. As fall comes and race season starts ramping up, you anticipate cooler weather and more enjoyable runs. It seems like it will be better. When that anticipation is met with more heat and humidity, it sucks the fun out of running. It makes it doubly hard because we want so badly for the weather to be good. This past week I had a really rough week in training for @stpeterunfest. I wasn't feeling it. I went to Disney with a friend for Wine n Dine weekend and I just wanted to have fun and spend time with friends. I skipped my long run. At first I struggled with the decision and then came to terms with it. It is what it is. Today I woke up more motivated to run than I've felt in a few weeks. I was ready for the miles today. Thanks to some awesome ladies, I got just the push I needed and it felt great. It was the run I've been wanting to have for a while now. Faster than planned but still felt good. All thanks to V. Who still won't take selfies with me ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜˜ I'm ready for this final week and a half of training. Race day will bring what it brings and at this point I can't worry about it. I've done what I can do and put in the miles. This was a great run physically, felt pretty strong the whole time and my breathing was good. No side stitches. Mentally it was a whole other story. For some reason I just woke up not wanting to run and that mentality carried over into the run. After my first three miles and warm up when I went back for the @runtampa group photo I wanted to quit. I was drenched and it was gross feeling outside. I had to talk myself through the final 7 miles. Literally gave myself a pep talk every single mile. The run is done though and I didn't quit so that has to speak for something, right? What a difference 9 degrees makes! Sunday I had trouble holding a 10:20 pace in 79 degree weather with high humidity. Today the humidity was about 20% less than usual and it was 70 when I went out to run. I held a pace just over 10 minutes a mile with ease and even had a conversation with my running buddies the whole time! If it could just always be this nice running would be amazing. In lieu of my "bad" 10k this past weekend where I didn't hit my goals I'd set for myself, I wanted to reflect on how far I've come since I started running. January 2015 was my second 10k at @stpetebeachclassic. The weather was perfect and I took more than a minute off my first 10k time. I was thrilled! March 2016, a year and change later, I went to Orlando to race @bestdamnrace. It was my third 10k and I took 5 minutes off my PB. And that even happened after a rogue cobblestone tripped me on course and I went flying headfirst onto the road! I couldn't find any 10ks I ran in 2017 for time (and maybe I didn't I had a Disney phase where I ran lots of #rundisney events and just stopped for character pics the whole time). February 2019 I went back to @bestdamnrace this time in Safety Harbor where I ran a 59:05. I worked super hard for that sub 60 and I was so damn proud of myself for making it happen! This was following a marathon training cycle in 2017 where I ran #allthemiles and set new PBs in like every distance besides the marathon right after. Fast forward to January 2019, almost 8 months after starting coaching with @schmenge. At first I thought I was happy with sub 60 and I didn't need to get faster. But as I saw my times continue to drop I thought maybe...I could make something happen. I ran @stpetebeachclassic again in 55:55. My best 10k to date. (And perfectly paced too). My point in this long ass post is #keepshowingup. I don't know who needs to hear this now but I'm sure some of you do (and maybe I did too). Persistence and consistency pay off. I was never an athlete before I started running. I came to this sport with no background. I just found something I love to do and did it. And I kept showing up. Maybe your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or even 5th race isn't your best. Maybe your 25th race isn't. But if you keep showing up you're bound to find the magic. Well today was definitely not my race. Conditions were horrible with temps at 79 just prior to the start and 100% humidity. THANKS Nestor. By mile 2 I knew I was going to have to throw my goals out the window and run by effort. I also forgot to set my watch to auto lap and still had it on manual so my splits got really messed up and I honestly have no idea what they really were. I was keeping my pace below 10:20 until mile 5 when I got a horrible side stitch and had to walk a majority of that mile to fix my breathing. Overall it was just a bad race for me. They can't all be great though and I've got some 10ks coming up in a few months that hopefully will have much better weather so ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž for that! Went out to support these amazing badass mother runners as they tackled 20 milers for their last long training runs before some marathons coming up. Decided to sleep in a little and take the miles down to Bayshore since it was such a gorgeous morning out! Totally forgot the running of the Tampa Police Memorial race was today ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ But like a polite runner I stayed on the opposite side so I wouldn't disturb the racers. โœŒโœŒ Tempo miles felt good this morning even in full sun! "Small personal victories can show you even greater things are possible in the future." -26 Marathons, Meb Keflezighi I've been reading the book 26 Marathons by Meb Keflezighi lately and I've had some huge insights from it. This was one of his lessons when he was coming back from an injury that temporarily took him out of marathon training and it really resonated with me now. Coming back from my ankle injury has been tough. Many times I've been frustrated by what seems like a lack of progress compared to where I was just prior to injury. But tonight I ran my fastest mile since getting injured! It felt AMAZING and I know it means greater victories are coming soon! Consistency is key.
