Calm versus Turmoil Bringing calm into our lives is a good thing. Turmoil is the opposite of calm. There are two type of turmoil, outer and inner. Outer turmoil has to do with physical aspects of our lives such as finances, relationships, politics, employment, physical health as examples. Inner turmoil has to do with our mental and emotional state such as sadness, hopelessness, depression, anxiety, confusion, uncertainty, doubt, mental chatter (monkey mind) as examples. Likewise, there are two types of calm, outer and inner. Knowing these differences is the starting point, the open door, to calmness in your life. Maybe it is the time change or I have been working too hard, but I am needing more sleep than usual. Before going to sleep, I do a breathing exercise to help settle me into sleep. I take a big inhale, then exhale it all out and then I hold my breath. I hold my breath because it increases the carbon dioxide in my body. Then I get a bigger breath in with oxygenates my tissues. It brings more blood to my brain and heart. It allows for more air to enter my lungs. It calms my nervous system. And it helps me slide into sleep calmly. Have you talked to a stranger recently? Maybe someone in your classes or someone at the grocery store. BBC says research suggests we may often underestimate the positive impact of connecting with others for both our own and others' well being. For example, having a conversation with a stranger on your way to work may leave you both feeling happier than you would think.
