🌀 The one thing that keeps us on this planet, without which we would float away is the very same thing that shrinks us during the day. Gravity beats us down and also provides us with all that we need to find a magical lift. Newton’s 3rd law - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. To find this lift up, against gravity’s pull, all you need is a body and a floor 👌😁 No matter what part of your body is touching the floor, you can find a lift up simply by being more mindfully grounded with your feet and pushing down a little more. After all we are designed with a foot that has natural balance owing to its arch and a spine that has curves to give us more spring. Your feet cannot support your posture, balance nor stability if they don’t sense the ground. If you don’t fully feel the ground you will seek support elsewhere. Shift your attention so that you become aware of your feet being touched by the ground as well as touching it. Imagine the floor coming up to meet your feet and welcoming them - this will invite you to attune your feet to the earth. Your use of your feet is as crucial to postural health as is steady mindful breathing, core control or pelvic mobility. The feet are the foundation of your physical stance and also influence your psychological footing - How assuredly you stand on your “own two feet” in expressing your needs and opinions and in fulfilling your responsibilities definitely has a physical base too. 🎥 video is sped up ⚠️ ———————- #sundayselfcare on the #pilatesreformer 👆 Its been a while since I have practiced the #upstretch and #elephant on the Reformer - an exercise in which the application of the principle of “oppositions” is essential 💥 The line of the body extends from the hips through the trunk, shoulders, arms and hands creating a long straight line reaching up and away through the sit bones whilst the legs hinge from the hips creating another straight line pivoting from the hips. As the carriage pulls in the powerful opposition of the energy is in play, lengthening the back line of the trunk and the legs by lifting through the tailbone and pushing away from the footbar 🔸This exercise strengthens shoulder and trunk stabilization 🔸Improves hamstring and shoulder flexibility 🔸maintain ribcage and TA connection to support trunk and shoulder girdle stabilization. NO SPRING RESISTANCE 🔥🔥🔥 This exercise is inspired by @seanbergarapilates and his amazing - REFORMER ~ No Springs Pilates - Workbook - I can highly recommend 💥 ————————————————— 👌💪 I have added some of my own variations to his original exercise in the manual. After trial and testing I decided to take my arms overhead to create opposition of the shins and knees lengthening forward and also I felt less tendency to compensate with my shoulders and neck. My variation is lifting and lowering with neutral pelvis and and then spinal articulation. 🔸 Then a push and pull all the way out without lowering down. 💥Don’t be deceived by how easy this looks - it’s a killer 🔥🔥🔥 The second video is the #shoulderbridge on the heels close to the footbar 🔥 * So often we are misled by thinking heavier springs - the more challenging the movement - but in many exercises the opposite is true - this is an intense hamstring and glute workout and the focus is to control eccentric and concentric contraction - simultaneously the muscles of the anterior hip and knee joint are lengthened. I am not genetically very flexible ~ or Hypermobile and definitely don’t flop into stretches or poses. Sometimes I wish I could 😅although Hypermobility leads to joint laxity and instability , which over time leads to pain, joint damage and injury. Pilates improves your strength of these very important stabilizers which support functional range of movement. Your awareness is fined tuned, so when you go to YOUR end ranges think about how much you are training your proximal stability to achieve distal mobility. Using the #pilatesring allows for some assist and resist in the stretch. We should try to balance active and passive range of movement. Using strength and flexibility together is what leads to greater mobility. Alterations in alignment cause faulty movement patterns and will disturb disturb specific functional movement patterns and decrease neuromuscular efficiency. Muscle tightness is a form of protection in the body and is secondary to muscle weakness. If a muscle remains stuck in a tight or shortened position, it changes the ability of that muscles to effectively produce or reduce force which could lead to altered joint range of movement . So you can stretch and strengthen all you want, but perhaps consider first bringing awareness to your daily habits and compensation pattens.
