Too many days away from a consistent practice and I sure felt it working on this deep backbend today! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Backbends really don’t come naturally to me and they take lots of extra practice for me to make any progress. BUT - the more I realized that backbends are more of a front body stretch than just trying to bend your back, the easier this became. Quads, hip flexors, abs, chest... working on that flexibility really made a difference! Are you a naturally bendy person? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Day 7 of #WellRoundedYogis is #FireflyPose OR #CrowPose.✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m choosing Firefly as it’s one of my favorite arm balances, although it made zero sense to me when I first started practicing yoga! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Day 5 of #WellRoundedYogis is a #StraddleFold or #MiddleSplit.✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I learned today that my legs are the exact width of my favorite secret spot at the neighborhood park! 🙌🏻 #perfectfit #MyOCDisHappy ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I would normally default to the Straddle Fold option because I love all things fold... and not many things Middle Split. 🤣 But since our challenge is about being Well-Rounded, I went with my not so favorite option! My kids can watch tv or do homework in a #PancakeSplit with a 30 second warm up. Me on the other hand... I need a Hot Vinyasa class to really warm up, then follow it up with extra hip openers like #skandasana #sidelunge & #frogpose. Grabbing that top foot gives it a little extra balancing/ splitsy/ backbendy/ hip opening goodness. As I’m opening my hip & chest to the side, there’s a push/pull going on between my top foot & hand - definitely helps with the balance here! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Day 2 of #WellRoundedYogis is #CamelPose OR #Kapotasana.✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m choosing Camel because it’s one of my very favorite backbends - but I used to think it was the worst pose EVER for the longest time! Over time and finally learning how to practice this pose correctly, it’s become my go-to to prep for deeper backbends. Some of the best cues I’ve learned over the years: -Hips over knees/ hips push forward -Tailbone tucked -Knees & shins hip distance & parallel -Chest lifts UP before you bend back -Squeeze shoulder blades to broaden chest ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I played with lifting arms overhead today and seeing how parallel I could keep them, and how long I could hold it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Day 1 of #WellRoundedYogis is #Lolasana OR #LSit.✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am so thankful that we have 2 options to choose from on our first day... because Lolasana is my nemesis and I much prefer to practice L-Sits any day! Actually I haven’t been practicing those as often as I should lately and I sure felt it while filming today! My hip flexors are going to be sore tomorrow! 😭 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Swipe to see my progression to learning how to L-Sit. Placement of hands in relation to hips was a trial & error for me, as well as determining just the right mix of long spine vs rounded back. Practicing single leg lifts was so good for building hip flexor strength and pushing ground away with the sole goal of lifting hips off ground cued me in on how much core engagement was needed. These are NOT easy (although I think they’re 1000x easier than Lolasana lol!) but with practice & patience you will get there! This pose itself wasn’t too hard but Joyce included an extra step: show your face and share a random fun fact about ourselves! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Day 1️⃣0️⃣ of #AloAboutTheWall is a Restorative Pose. ⁣⠀⁣ My practice (and my whole life in general?!) used to be GO GO GO with very little SLOW, but carving out the time to include a Restorative practice has changed everything! Providing a physical AND mental balance helps manage my stress and anxiety, and using props that allow poses to be held longer give all the benefits of deep, passive stretching while relaxing. #Ahhhhhhh ⁣⠀⁣ Thank you to everyone who joined us for this awesome challenge and for sharing your practice these last 10 days. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Day 9️⃣ of #AloAboutTheWall is any Warrior Pose. ⁣⠀⁣ I think Warrior 2 will always be my favorite variation as it always makes me feel so strong💪🏻 (or weak AF if a teacher asks us to hold it for 5 minutes 🤣). The Wall + a Yoga Block was such a helpful combination when I was first learning proper alignment in #Warrior2Pose! My struggle was always in keeping the front knee from tracking in & out instead of staying over top of the ankle. Placing a block between your shin & the wall forces you to engage legs, ground through center of back heel & ultimately keep that knee over the ankle. ⁣⠀⁣ Be sure to check out my cohosts for what they’re doing today. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Day 8️⃣ of #AloAboutTheWall is a Twist. ⁣⠀⁣ #YogaTwists are one of my favorite ways to release tension, both mentally and physically! They help to open the chest, shoulders and back, all of which can help to decrease feelings of anxiousness as you release stored tension in the body. ⁣⠀⁣ ⁣⠀⁣ I took a twist today via a #RevolvedHalfMoon. Setting up at the wall helps ensure hips stay even and pointing towards the floor as you isolate the twist to the upper body. I truly am enjoying this challenge and love seeing all the different things everyone can do with the help of a wall! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Day 7️⃣ of #AloAboutTheWall is a Split. ⁣⠀⁣ ... or not, and that’s ok! My splits have been years in the making. I never ever did the splits as a kid so the thought of myself getting into them as an adult always seemed impossible. But as I got deeper into my yoga practice, consistently working on hip & hamstring flexibility (and lots of Yin Yoga!) the closer and closer I got to those splits. I love taking the splits to the wall now as it helps force me to square my hips! ⁣⠀⁣ ⁣⠀⁣ No need to compare yourself to others if the splits aren’t on your list of tricks yet... be patient, honor your body and be happy with what you CAN do! ❤️ ⁣⠀⁣ Be sure to check out my cohosts for what they’re doing today. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Day 6️⃣ of #AloAboutTheWall is an Inversion. ⁣⠀⁣ The wall was such an important part in my learning to handstand press! But... NOT by leaning my head into the wall and pressing up. 🙅🏼‍♀️ Using the wall by hanging out in an L-Shape was so much more effective. 🙋🏼‍♀️ It was a game changer for me in understanding how stacking hips over shoulders over wrists should feel (so important in a handstand press AND in helping to cure the dreaded banana-back)! ⁣⠀⁣ ⁣⠀⁣ If you can get legs to 90 degrees at the wall (requires shoulders/hips/low back nice & warmed up!) and with core super engaged, going into tip toes and shifting hips PAST shoulders might might might just allow you to float off the wall! It’s not easy... was actually IMPOSSIBLE for me at first... but practice definitely made progress and I’m so thankful for this wall drill! ⁣⠀⁣ Be sure to check out my cohosts for what they’re doing today.
