This is one of the more understated images from Bella Koran’s In Bloom photo series. Intended to represent the space between childhood fantasy and womanhood, this image is so reminiscent of Ophelia to me, only instead of floating in the water, she floats in a sea of green hydrangeas #hydrangeas #flowers #Ophelia #photography #beauty #fantasy

The Maasai of Kenya have always impressed me with their stature and regal bearing. I am the proud owner of a couple of their beaded necklaces, one a purchase, the other a gift from an elder. As a fashion designer they are probably referenced as inspiration more than any other tribal people, and as such have become a symbol of everything that is wrong with fashions ongoing cultural appropriation problem. There is still so much confusion in many people’s mind at what the fuss is about or what constitutes cultural appropriation and what doesn’t. For me it’s pretty simple, if it’s not yours, you don’t understand the codes, meanings and symbolism and the people who those intangible symbols do belong to are prejudices against, struggling with land rights and access to clean water, then you shouldn’t be using their heritage to make a commercial collection - simple! #Maasai #MaasaiBeading #Beading #culturalAppropriation #AfricanTradition #AfricanBeauty #kenya

This amazing image by Jimmy Nelson depicts one of only 2,500 Drokpa people left living in the disputed territory between India and Pakistan. Considered the last of the Tibetan nomadic tribes, the Drokpa unlike their neighbors enjoy public shows of affection and participate in spousal swopping as a matter of culture. Some attribute their ancestry directly from Alexander the Great, with Drokpa meaning white skinned in Ladakhi. Traditional clothing includes woolen dresses, goatskin capes and stunning floral headdresses.

Adam Koziol of Koziol Gallery took this incredible image of this young Himba boy from Namibia. His beauty is transcendent. The Himba are a tribal people from northern Namibia numbering only around 50,000. They are known for the distinctive otjize paste used on their skin and hair and resulting in the beautiful ochre locks sometimes adorned with tasseled ends. The Himba have suffered through many disasters including severe droughts and warfare during Namibia’s war of independence, most notably they suffered from the same genocide the Herero people did at the hands of German colonialists. The photographer Adam Koziol is only 26 years old and has photographed many indigenous tribal people around the world. #Himba #Namibia #NamibianBeauty #AfricanBeauty #Tribal #Indigenous

This is one of an incredible@series of images for Vlisco, taken by Creative Director Mind Og Okinkwo who was inspired by Nigerian women and who is rewriting the narrative on African Fashion through powerful imagery celebrating black women. Vlisco has been manufacturing Dutch Waxed Cotton since 1846. While it has a decidedly Colonial heritage, Africans from Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Camaroon and Senegal have taken ownership by fashioning the bright prints into stunning, statement outfits fit for a queen. #Vlisco #WaxedCotton #AfricanPrints #AfricanTextiles #BlackWomen #BlackBeauty #StrongWomen #cotedivoire #senegal #nigeria #ghana #camaroon

This incredible photograph is of a Kalinga woman from the Philippines. Her name is Apo Whang Od, and she is the last of the Kalinga tattoo artists. The women of the Kalinga tribe have a long tradition of tattoo art. Tattoos are inspired by objects in daily life such as rice terraces, and intended to beautify, they are hand tapped with a bamboo stick and a lemon thorn, and the design mapped out with strips of grass dipped in charcoal and water. The photo is by Adam Kozoil a photographer from Poznan who specializes in documenting dying tribal cultures. #PhilippinoBeauty #Philippines #tattoo #traditionaltattoos #kalinga #kalingatattoo #tribaltattoo #tribalphotography
