Hearing their stories, how they came to Pilates, their evolution as teachers and all the life stuff that happens along the way that makes them the unique human being that they are. Today I got to hang out with Cadence from @brooklynstrength. Even though we just met it was as if we'd been friends for ages. It turns out we both graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, we danced professionally in New York City, are entrepreneur boss babes (can't bring myself to # that 😂), love to travel, and are passionate about helping our students live in their bodies better. Finding common ground and being witness to each others journey with kindness and compassion is powerful. I'm so lucky to get to connect with awesome people! The goal of this workshop is to create a safe space to explore and mitigate any physical affects of Top Surgery that may lead to overly tight pecs, shoulders, scar pain and postural issues. Weird hard things to do when you've stopped working out cuz scared of fat and start working out because you live in a human body and being curious about life in a human body that grows and changes is weird hard and sometimes fun. Keep your heels up (extra imaginary points for keeping your heels together) squat all the way down, come to your knees in a controlled way, go back the way you came - no heels or hands on the floor the entire time. Werks major mobility goodness, plus strength, balance and concentration. Repeat 5000 times or as long as your focus will take you. 🤓💪

Back to spending time on my hands. Playing with finding a moment of suspension in these moving split upside down things ( non static handstands) and also just hanging out, feeling alignment, misalignment, fun, strength, thoughts.. Pilates can be very challenging for guys.( intimidating even!) Often super inflexible and less versed in how their body feels - ie me: where do you feel this? Guys: (face red with effort) I dunno! Legs??! I find that once dudes get over the confusion of not understanding the movement right away.. The benefits and progress start to show up big time. Putting in the time/effort does pays off. Seen here:LEFT:Major shift in thorasic spinal mobility (chest opening and mobility) - increased body awareness, not shown - actually engaging more deeply in one's body with care and understanding on a deeper, internal level. The pay off from that is lifelong. RIGHT: just starting Pilates, still skeptical and stuck in #deskbody 🤓💥👌

My lisp is so melodic 🎶 Giggles and neurological integration is basically my ultimate goal for every class. I do that with what I call Play Time ie time to work on a movement until it's an experience and has been engaged with not just copied or placed on top of our bodies only to disappear once we leave " class" - what are we here for if not to actually grow, learn and change? To actually walk away with a body different from the one we came in with - putting our brains in our bodies moving with curiosity in safe space - that's where learning happens and growth happens and connection happens. Who cares about shapes / exercises / at the end of the day what ideas are you integrating? How is the activity you're doing growing you? If you can't play in a movement how are you experiencing it?

I am reminded over and over in life just how completely irreplaceable certain life supporting routines are: clean house, homemade food, plentiful sleep, regular exercise. After spending 6 weeks packing and unpacking and then another 4 living in clutter and disarray as things slowly began to find their new place. I am finally doing the foundational things that support and create a nest for my actual life in the way I experience it, to emerge. Not the wake up, do things, go to bed life, but a life that can support dreams, ambitions, friends, adventure, curiosity, growth... The me part of living. I can't stress enough how enormous an impact it is to put these building blocks in place - and yes, they themselves require time and effort and space but if you are not living in a clean ( not white glove but just things in their place, floor space clear, separation of bed and work and eat space, some beauty here and there to look at..) space, if you rarely eat food you made or if you rarely enjoy the food you make, if you aren't sleeping enough, if you don't regularly engage with and experience your body... Before all the other things to try that might " change your life/ mood/ future" try putting those things in place. Really really try. Even if it takes you 6 months, even if in trying you realize your job makes it impossible to sleep enough or be at home to cook food... Maybe in the trying you'll also notice where you put your own basic needs last to serve another purpose. Imagine if therapists first asked; what do you eat? How much do you sleep? How comfortable/ inspiring is your home for you? Do you exercise?..I know some therapists do ask these questions but not enough do. The improvement on my own mental health since these basics have returned has been huge. The shift in my daily perspective and capacity to handle stress big enough it was worth posting about. The slippery slope of letting go of food prep, bedtime, laundry day Etc starts often as " being easy on myself" ( totally valid) but can quickly become a new negative habit of chaos making. Give basic nesting a try if it's not already your jam and see what happens 💥
