How to: Straddle press to handstand using a strap. 🤸 As you get comfortable using the wall to practice your pressing then this is a really good transitional step. The strap gets as much stick as the wall does but I really don't care, it worked for me and it may or may not work for you but isn't it worth trying? I'll take all the help I can get at this age 😭 So what's the issue with using a strap you might ask..... well firstly you have to push your arms outwards which is not how you would press minus a strap. You would be pulling arms inwards. Once you realise this and balance your press practice using alternative methods then go for it! It won't ruin your life and it feels damn well amazing! The strap I'm using here is an infinity strap but you can use any strap or belt, just make a loop wide enough that it keeps your arms shoulder width. Set up exactly how I've explained in my previous posts regarding shoulders. Lean forward, draw hips up and come right up onto your tippy toes, if you feel nervous to straddle press then you could lift one leg at a time and try a puppy press. Forget about going all the way to handstand if you're just learning and focus on just lifting the hips. Make sure strap is above elbows and press arms hard into the strap moving outwards. The strap helps keep the shoulders stable. Try not to lean forward too much and if you feel you're bending your arms, then don't worry but engage your triceps as much as you can and really focus on your maintaining a strong shoulder girdle. Notice in my diagram above the distance between my hands and feet. The scary part is when you get up to handstand and your arms are strapped in so perhaps keep a wall or cushions close just in case while you get familiar with how this feels. The first time I tried this my legs felt like cement so don't give up! 🤸 #yoga #catspresstips #questforthepress #handstandpress . I know I share with you all the progress I made in my practice, but I think it’s correct to show you that sometimes a progress can also look like this. As you know I injured myself and at the moment I cannot do a lot of poses I was able to do before, but that doesn’t mean I cannot practice anymore. You should always do what your body can , no matter how your practice looks like it’s yours and it’s ok no matter what. You can work on heart openers for example even though you don’t do the most advanced pose, the important things is that you get the benefits from it and that you feel good. ❤️ #keepitrealwithmarti #yogawithmarti . Then practice this sequence which opens the hips, quads, shoulders, and back for the full expression of this pose 😍 Warm up with a couple of sun A's and sun B's (or your own warm up to lubricate the spine and get the joints warm). Hold each pose for 5-10 breaths and repeat on both sides: . . 1. Figure four - flex foot over top of opposite thigh to open hips 2. Low lunge - square hips and engage back glute to open quads 3. Low lunge with double bind - reach back with one or two hands to grab onto ankle (opens shoulders + quads even more) 4. Crooked monkey - opens hips and quads 5. Camel - opens hip flexors and shoulders/upper back 6. Puppy dog - opens shoulders and upper back even more 7. Half pigeon - stay upright and then come down to sleeping pigeon 8. Half pigeon double bind - reach back with one or both hands to grab onto ankle for more shoulder/quad opening 9. Half pigeon kick back leg up and lean back with head - works on active flexibility of the back leg 10. Mermaid - back ankle in elbow crease, bind fingers over head 11. Mermaid top arm grabs foot - to go deeper, reach the top arm to the back foot 12. Change the grip of the bottom arm and rotate bottom shoulder, square chest towards front and slowly come into king pigeon 👑🐦♥️ . . . @bestyoga post today! by @geeoice_yoga . in case you need another reason to love blocks: these babies come pre-loaded with varying levels of height support. which is really just an over-the-top way of saying we have OPTIONS. literally, blocks have our backs. ⠀ take camel pose, for example. this is a pretty intense backbend & front body stretch for most of us mere mortals. a simple pair of blocks can make camel MUCH more doable & enjoyable. and merely turning the blocks gives us different height advantages, so we can get to know the pose & maybe hang out a little longer without feeling like we’ll snap in half. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ p.s. why yes of course this is all official terminology. ⠀ p.p.s. yes, those are hyperextended, double-jointed elbows. i swear, i even felt like i was bending them in for these pics. nope, still wonky. . @bestyoga post today! by @yogamand . I am such a creature of habits. Who can relate? Habits are awesome. You don’t have to think too much about the things you do. Being on autopilot is amazing. But habits can make you dull, too. Hence I used a different layout for my #SaturdayProgress 🤣 ⠀ The collage shows my #Lolasana journey over the past few years. ⠀ * Bottom left is from Mar 2014 in front of my old yoga wall with SOCKETS. Such a nuisance. That was before I found a good retouch app 😉 (it was Carnival season in case you’re wondering about the blonde hair). Posted it for the #InspiredYogis with the hashtag #dotheshityousuckat 🤪 * Bottom right exactly a year later. Blocks have gone and I could even lift a little bit higher. Time of hold approx 1/10s * I could get my knees a little higher up to my collarbones in Jan 2016. I was so friggin proud. * Could get my bum up a bit higher in 2017. Feet not together and I could hold it approx 1/5s. But who cares? ⠀ Lolasana is still not a regular for me. On some days I can hold it like a pro, other days I slide down like the old Coyote along the cliff. For those days I work with the strap. I added a vid showing another way to use a strap for this pose. ⠀ May I ask you a favor? Would you please cheer me up a bit? I have to do my taxes. I am such a procrastinator #havingatoughtimewithdeadlines 🙈 ⠀ Side note: because I know I a creature of habit I break out every now and then. Just for a change. Just to see if I can. @bestyoga post today! by @gypsyon__ . Someone told me the other day that I’m easy to hate. It was the first time anyone has ever said that to me because in real life, no one that knows me would say that they hate me. They would probably say the opposite because for as long as i can remember I’ve wanted to be friends with everyone, or at least make them laugh, or smile at them in an attempt to make their day better. Of course, i haven’t always been my best self, everyday, but i have tried to do so in consciousness. - That person went on, she said “you’re pretty, you have a cute boyfriend, a nice dog, and a passion for life that not everyone has found yet.” - I’d never really looked from the outside in before but this made me do so. From the outside i am my younger self, i am looking at myself now in bewilderment wondering how i became the epitome of everything i once thought was oh so mainstream. I could instantly see how easy it would be to judge me or envy my life and i cringed. - I have worked hard to be a good person. I’ve worked hard to never make anyone feel less than in my company, and I’ve worked my butt off to be where i am today, but in no way do i feel the perfection that some may see. - I know though that others can only meet me as deeply as they’ve met themselves. I know that my younger self could’ve easily felt that pain of not yet finding her path when looking at the older version of herself, and i am immediately reminded to soften around these words. - Just know this; if you are still on the forefront of your own internal struggle, i promise you that it will end, and when it does, you will be able to stand up as the soul survivor of something no one else will ever know anything about. ✨ - @aloyoga Fall season faves . @bestyoga post today! by @march_yoga . Stress has been around since the beginning of time. It started as the fight or fight response when early humans confronted a life-threatening situation. In that situation, stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, are produced. Your blood vessels constrict, blood pressure goes up, pupils dilate, heart rate quickens, and breathing becomes more rapid. The body is preparing itself to do battle or run. This response is essential in times of acute danger. But problems such as hefty work schedule, crying kids, traffic, toxic relationships etc can trigger the same response. Given the pressures of daily life, chronic stress itself has become a life-threatening situation. It can cause a lot of health problems including headaches, gastrointestinal issues, insomnia, trouble concentrating, anxiety, depression, increased body weight, high blood pressure and heart disease. We can’t eliminate the stress. But we can relieve the fight-or-flight response that sends our bodies into danger mode. And we can cultivate a relaxation response over time that will reduce our physiological stress reaction. I personally was suffering and I still struggle with chronic stress. But a big shift in my perspective of dealing with things came with yoga a few years ago. Now I can see myself dealing with things in a more effective way. Back then I lacked straight judgement, a serious affect of stress, and I would create more problems than solve them. This journey is giving me the chance to reach people and affect their lives in a positive way. So I decided to learn more about stress to help me and others to deal with it. I was always a person that felt good giving back to others and I can't wait to learn more and share more. 🙏 .
