READ ME I DON’T CARE IF YOU YOGA OR NOT THIS IS IMPORTANT ENOUGH FOR CAPITAL LETTERS. 💪🏼 ⠀ I finally did it. I piked down and piked back up! THREE YEARS this took me. ⠀ THREE YEARS of watching yogis do it their first time out. THREE YEARS of drills upon drills. THREE YEARS of me wondering what the hell I was doing wrong, why I couldn’t do it, WHY WAS I BROKEN. ⠀ Here’s the thing: just because something is easy for another doesn’t mean it’ll be easy for you. I’ve had to work harder and longer than anyone I know to get this. YEARS LONGER. But I’m not competing against anyone else. It’s fantastic that Random Yoga Girl pike pressed her first try. It was probably those expensive leggings she was wearing. She’s also 20. I’m not 20. I’m 43. I’m a janky mess. But I’m patient. And I’m determined. Those will always win. ⠀ So feeling frustrated because you’re not at your goal weight? STOP PUTTING A TIMELINE ON LIFE! ⠀ Disappointed you haven’t learned splits/handstand/whatever yet? STOP PUTTING A TIMELINE ON LIFE! ⠀ Just keep at it. Adjust methods and expectations and continue on. It’ll happen when (and if) it’s meant to happen. Patience. Determination. Expensive leggings. ⠀ #headstand #allytroutstartyoga #learntoheadstand #yogaprogress
Idk. I mean I haven’t seen the original picture of @margotrobbie by @vogueaustralia but last I saw her she was pretty lean and if I could recreate this picture in 30 seconds with my iPhone and one filter to brighten the background MAYBE IT’S NOT PHOTOSHOPPED BUT A NORMAL BODY. ⠀ Some of us are genetically inclined to have thigh gaps and bony, sharp knees and don’t want to be shamed for them. Damn I didn’t even know I should be ashamed of my bony knees. Now I have something else to stress over! *Calling around to get Juvaderm for my knees. ⠀ Like you seriously can’t win in this world. You’re too fat or too skinny and don’t think you regular-shaped people are immune, they will find something to shame you for too!
Today I went to my first high school pep rally since 1993 (don’t bother subtracting. it’s a lot) and it was so fun with the band and the cheerleaders and the presenting of the homecoming court. ⠀ Now I told you the other day I don’t ever cry. I might cry at a funeral if I see others crying. I will usually cry watching babies being born. But I will ALWAYS cry when people get together and act all awesome in union like a band concert or a flash mob. Last year I had a mental breakdown at my oldest’s cheer competition. Like ugly cried so bad the people sitting in front of me turned around concerned. ⠀ And again today I got all weepy with the kids playing in the band and cheerleaders cheering and crowd excited and the seniors rushing up to pull the coaches down in Tug of War. ⠀ @glennondoyle once said to pay special attention to these little moments because they make the harder moments easier to bear. I’m enjoying those sweet moments today, and also the fact that I’m so damn close to grabbing my foot I CANT STAND IT. Using an @infinitystrap
I did. I watched their videos; read and analyzed their tutorials. ⠀ Now I’m not saying it’s the most ideal way. Or the easiest way. Or the safest way. Or the quickest way. Come to think of it, it’s probably not the smartest way. Wait. Maybe it is smart. I didn’t have to leave my house. ⠀ So let me tell you what I did. It’s actually outlined in my hot new memoir, “I Learned How to Headstand the Really Long and Hard Way: A That’s What She Said Guide to Inversions” ⠀ ✅ Commit to practice 5-10 mins a day. EVERY DAY. Ok most days. At least 5 times a week. 7 is better. Twice a month no. ✅ Practice after your workout. Being up and active before I inverted helped ease the head rush. PS, it goes away after a few weeks. ✅ Try #tripodheadstand first. I used the couch for balance so that my legs weren’t reaching back for the wall, which encourages that bad ol’ banana back. ✅ Once you find balance, practice different leg shapes. ✅ After you feel secure with tripod, move to #boundheadstand AKA #supportedheadstand. It’s much trickier to start with, but you‘ll likely find it more comfortable. I prefer it over tripod. ✅ Join yoga challenges to keep you excited and motivated. And you make friends YAY! ✅ Video everything! ✅ Celebrate all the wins. Every inch. Every hold. Every new outfit. ⠀ But wait. HOWWW do you headstand? Swipe to see what @catbradleyyoga and @yogamand advise. They are amazing follows! I will post more yogi follows in my stories. ⠀ So, you ready to headstand now? Save this post and tag a buddy. You can both make people feel weird while you headstand at the beach HEADSTANDS ARE THE NEW SELFIE. ⠀ Follow #allytroutstartyoga for more advice.
Oh man. It feels REALLY good not busting my ass anymore. If there was any doubt that I started at zero, let this be proof. ☝️ ⠀ ⠀ I started with yoga videos on YouTube. Yoga with Adrienne was great for a nervous, beginner yogi. ⠀ Then I joined at least one yoga challenge a week. They pushed me to try poses I’d never otherwise do. I even learned how to pincha, puppy press, and chaturanga from IG challenges. They kept me motivated and accountable to my home practice. (I can count on 2 hands the number of real classes I’ve been to. Small town life *sigh.) ⠀ I took tons of videos. Mostly for my own feedback, but also to post. You can look back and see my entire #yogajourney on IG. Every fail, every breakthrough, every unfortunate outfit. Every. Unfortunate. Outfit. ⠀ #allytroutstartyoga for more advice.
You are not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. ⠀ You’re the wrong flavor. You’re full of caffeine. You’re not full of caffeine. You’re not organic. You’re too expensive. You’re too posh or too basic. You’re too time consuming. You’re full of unnecessary additives. YOU’RE NOT COFFEE. ⠀ There will always be something about you that people don’t like. But do you like you? Are you good people most of the time? Can you sleep at night knowing you did the best you could with the tools you had? ⠀ Every comment that’s made to me I will decipher. Is it really about me or their own issues and biases? Filter out the crap and if there is anything left, take it as feedback. ⠀ Wait, I’m probably wine. After hanging out with me you’ll be tired and have a headache.
A super leggy shot for day 6 #inversions for #AloAbouttheWall and on slide 2 a bit less leggy shot for days 4 and 5 #backbend and #shoulders. Technically this first pic could double as tomorrow’s day 7s #splits post too but I have another leggy shot planned and you know how I feel about filling my feed with legs IT’S CURRENTLY MY LIFE’S ONLY GOAL DON’T TELL MY BOSS. ⠀ Several days of #AloAboutTheWall is using #paulthewall. ⠀ Bestest hosts (yes I’m totally sucking up): @geeoice_yoga @amy.yogini @eileendelatorre @yogawesermarsch @stelasulzdorf ⠀ Thanks to our sponsors: @aloyoga @alo.moves
I have just realized that I tend to pick poses for challenges that emphasize my legginess. I like the way my legs look when I’m inverted, which is a lovely way to feel after hating them my entire life. And I still struggle to love them. But when I’m inverted they look long and strong and pretty. So here’s to vainly picking poses that make you feel better about yourself. Can’t wait for splits day. ⠀ Day 3 of #AloAboutTheWall is using #paulthewall to work quads. ⠀ Bestest hosts (yes I’m totally sucking up): @geeoice_yoga @amy.yogini @eileendelatorre @yogawesermarsch @stelasulzdorf ⠀ Thanks to our sponsors: @aloyoga @alo.moves
Daaaang this #wallplank was hard. My feet kept sliding down and my core collapsed every single time so it was nearly impossible to hold a straight line. Having my feet propped up on a ledge would have made this easier. Or legs on an exercise ball. Or a pulley system actually holding me up. Or how about not ever doing it again THAT’S MY FAVORITE OPTION. ⠀ Day 2 of #AloAboutTheWall is using #paulthewall to work our core. ⠀ Bestest hosts (yes I’m totally sucking up): @geeoice_yoga @amy.yogini @eileendelatorre @yogawesermarsch @stelasulzdorf ⠀ Thanks to our sponsors: @aloyoga @alo.moves
Do you have curly hair? Do you like it? ⠀ Yesterday someone asked me how I feel about my #curlyhair which isn’t an odd question because a lot of #curlies don’t like theirs. It’s not the easiest hair to have. ⠀ I do like my curls and I love how it’s so different from everyone else’s, but it’s taken a long time to figure out how to manage it. I need 3 conditioners. I use at least a quarter cup of several styling products mixed. It takes 4-5 hours to air dry or an hour to blow dry. Wash day is a lot of work. ⠀ THANK GOD I only have to wash it once every 5-6 days. ⠀ Figuring out curly hair is a lot of trial and error, heavy on the error. I’ve wasted a lot money on products that didn’t work for me. But some things have worked and they are in a saved highlight called Curls. ⠀ If you’ve made it this far you either have curly hair, you’ll read anything, or you’re a curly-hair groupie like @korytokar. ⠀ Day 1 of #AloAboutTheWall is #forwardfold. ⠀ Bestest hosts (yes I’m totally sucking up): @geeoice_yoga @amy.yogini @eileendelatorre @yogawesermarsch @stelasulzdorf ⠀ Thanks to our sponsors: @aloyoga @alo.moves
